Brownian motion with dry friction: Fokker-Planck approach

چکیده
We solve a Langevin equation, first studied by de Gennes, in which there is a solid-solid or dry friction force acting on a Brownian particle in addition to the viscous friction usually considered in the study of Brownian motion. We obtain both the time-dependent propagator of this equation and the velocity correlation function by solving the associated time-dependent Fokker-Planck equation. Exact results are found for the case where only dry friction acts on the particle. For the case where both dry and viscous friction forces are present, series representations of the propagator and correlation function are obtained in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. Similar series representations are also obtained for the case where an external constant force is added to the Langevin equation. PACS numbers: 05.40.-a, 02.50.-r, 05.70.-a

Brownian Motion of Rotating Particles
A kinetic theory for the Brownian motion of spherical rotating particles is given starting from a generalized Fokker-Planck equation. The generalized Fokker-Planck collision operator is a sum of two ordinary Fokker-Planck differential operators in velocity and angular velocity space respectively plus a third term which provides a coupling of translational and rotational motions. This term stems...
متن کاملBrownian Motion of Stars, Dust, and Invisible Matter
Treating the motion of a dust particle suspended in a liquid as a random walk, Einstein in 1905 derived an equation describing the diffusion of the particle’s probability distribution in configuration space. Fokker and Planck extended this work to describe the velocity distribution of the particles. Their equation and its solutions have been applied to many problems in nature starting with the ...
متن کاملThe linear Fokker-Planck equation of standard Brownian motion as an (almost) nonlinear kinetic equation for an isolated N-particle system
It is long known that the Fokker-Planck equation with prescribed constant coefficients of diffusion and linear friction describes the ensemble average of the stochastic evolutions in velocity space of a Brownian test particle immersed in a heat bath of fixed temperature. Apparently, it is not so well known that the same partial differential equation, but now with constant coefficients which are...

In this paper Lie symmetry analysis is applied to find new solution for Fokker Plank equation of geometric Brownian motion. This analysis classifies the solution format of the Fokker Plank equation.
متن کاملGeneralized quantum Fokker-Planck, diffusion, and Smoluchowski equations with true probability distribution functions.
Traditionally, quantum Brownian motion is described by Fokker-Planck or diffusion equations in terms of quasiprobability distribution functions, e.g., Wigner functions. These often become singular or negative in the full quantum regime. In this paper a simple approach to non-Markovian theory of quantum Brownian motion using true probability distribution functions is presented. Based on an initi...
